THERE seems to be a retro-Anglo feeling in the air - or rather, underfoot. Patterned rugs for fall have colors reminiscent of carpets in Victorian boardinghouses and hotels, particularly golds, faded browns and yellows.

One designer, Rosemary Hallgarten, who is English but works in the United States, said she collaborated with Robert Dawson, an English ceramist, to put a twist on the classic flowery broadloom, "giving it an English sense of humor" with its wavy tile pattern. Another new rug was inspired by the 1960's pop culture of Carnaby Street in London.

Tile Perspective by Robert Dawson and Rosemary Hallgarten is 100 percent wool and has a gold, black and cream-colored pattern. It is $5,265 for a 6-by-9-foot rug, or $97 a square foot for custom sizes.
